Successful first stage of CWA Roadshow 2012

Wandering members Jacquie Cornish, Melanie Gunston and Nicola Kelliher. State President Maggie Donaldson with Sayah Drummond, CWA Young Volunteer of the Year at Mt Barker

The first stage of the State President's question and answer roadshow was an outstanding success. Enjoying wonderful CWA hospitality from Wandering, Mt Barker and Nannup members were able to meet Maggie Donaldson, State President of the Country Women's Association of WA Inc. In informal surrounding there was the opportunity to share inspiring and humorous stories, answer concerns and queries and take on board new ideas.

All of this reinforced the great contribution members are making in their communities. Visits are planned to other areas later in the year.

75th anniversary of "The CWA Cookery Book and Household Hints"

July 2011 through to State Conference 2012 marks the 75th anniversary of the publication of The CWA Cookery Book and Household Hints an icon of the Country Women’s Association of Western Australia.

At the State Conference in 1931 members were requested to send recipes to Mrs Agnes Barnes of Baandee, a cookery expert.   It took time to collect the recipes, prepare the copy and with the Great Depression little funds were available for the printing.  E.S. Wigg and Son agreed to print the first copy, offering the Association a royalty of three pence per copy.  The sale of the first CWA Cookery Book and Household Hints was at State Conference in 1936 for 2/6 a copy or 5/- for the cloth bound version.

The following is an excerpt from the preface of the first edition:

Women excel in the art of cooking.  They are specialists in those things that matter most in the home and that preserve the health of their family.  Hard times have made women economists – necessity has made them adaptable.

The recipes and hints contained in this book are all thoroughly reliable and are in almost daily use in the home.  They are for the most part simple and economical.  They are passed on in a spirit of goodwill, in the hope that they would assist in solving at least some of the problems of the Home.

Today it could be written that both genders excel in the art of cooking.  In a changing society it is accepted that domestic duties are shared.  The Association continues to receive accolades from both women and men for this publication which graces the shelves of so many kitchens Australia wide.

The 54th edition and special 75th anniversary copy of The CWA Cookery Book and Household Hints was launched in July.  Copies are available through the Association State Office.
