CWA COMMUNITY PROJECT GRANT RECIPIENT 2017 – NEWDEGATE BRANCH.
At CWA State Conference 2017, Fremantle Mayor Dr. Brad Pettitt announced that the 2017 $10,000 CWA Community Project Grant recipient for the best proposal for a community project was the Newdegate Branch.

Newdegate is made up of town and farming families of around three hundred people and is located in the Lake Grace Shire, 400km southeast of Perth.  Just under two years ago, the Newdegate Branch was under threat of closing down when it reached three active members.  Sadly, their CWA Centre was being used as a storage facility, and rarely for CWA or community meetings.

After some recruiting of the “younger” generation, their small group grew from three to a very strong twenty members.  As a result, their branch was revitalised with new ideas and great enthusiasm, which encouraged a new sense of community involvement.

The aim of their project will be to renovate the Newdegate CWA Centre in order to create a warm and friendly environment for a Mother’s Group Café.  This will be a meeting place for young mothers to obtain information and provide a happy, safe place for mums and bubs to engage and develop strong support networks.  A Mother’s Group Café has many proven benefits in an isolated rural community such as Newdegate, to provide an important lifeline for new mums.  It will also be a place for the local community nurse to meet the mums and carry out baby checks.

In their newly renovated CWA Centre, Newdegate Branch members also intend to organise workshops with Ngala and Kids Safe, and provide Toddler Nutrition Workshops.  It will also offer a venue for CWA Meetings; Newdegate Nippers Playgroup; Newdegate Book Club; Sewing Workshops; Art/Craft Workshops; and other community functions.
