International Day of Rural Women - WA Parliamentary Debate

On Wednesday 12 October 2022, The Hon. Jackie Jarvis MLC, Member for the South West Region, moved the following motion in the Legislative Council:

That this House notes that 15 October 2022 is the United Nations International Day of Rural Women. A day when we recognise the contribution of rural women to the economic development of regional WA as a vital labour force performing both paid and unpaid work. The house acknowledges the crucial role that women play in ensuring the sustainability of WA’s rural, regional, and remote communities and primary industries including mining, agricultural production, fishing, food security, land and natural resource management, and in building climate resilience.

The Motion was ‘debated’ in a positive bi-partisan way for 2 hours with Government, Opposition and Cross bench members allowed to speak on the subject.

The CWA of WA State President, Anne Gething and Chief Executive Officer, Trish Langdon were invited to have lunch with Ms Jarvis and then to hear the debate.  Most of our CWA of WA Board were also represented in the gallery to witness the debate as the day coincided with the regular bi-monthly Board Meeting.  It was certainly a privilege to listen to the WA Parliament's acknowledgement of the role of the CWA in Western Australia as well as rural women generally throughout the State.
